July 13-16, 2009
Yakima Convention Center
The 2009 Combined Summer Institute will focus on using the Universal Design for Learning Guidelines for improving access to the curriculum for students with disabilities. Presentations address: How do we intentionally and systematically design curriculum from the beginning to address individual differences? Is it possible to adapt the general education curriculum to meet the needs of students with multiple disabilities? How do we measure whether the curriculum is effective? How do we incorporate the three primary principles of a universally designed curriculum – the “what”; the “how”; and the “why” of learning? (See www.cast.org for the UDL Guidelines.)
The 3 ½ day conference will begin on Monday afternoon at 12:30 pm with a general session and continue daily through Thursday. Sessions will focus on how to implement effective curriculum and instructional strategies for all of the diverse learners in our special education programs. Practical applications, assistive technology, new curriculum ideas in content areas, effective communication and language strategies will be developed for working with children who are autistic, blind/visually impaired, deaf/hard of hearing, deaf-blind and/or multiply disabled.
