Communication and Language:
Bridge to Success


This conference focuses on families and professionals working with children who are autistic, blind/visually impaired, deaf/hard of hearing, deaf-blind and/or multiply disabled.

Presenters and participants will discuss how to develop language and communication skills necessary for success in school as outlined in the Communication Essential Academic Learning Requirements (EALRs)  and Grade Level Expectations (GLE’s) for students who are autistic, blind/visually impaired, deaf/hard-of hearing, and/or multiply disabled.  NEW this year will be a full strand on Assistive Technology presentations in facilitating language and communication!

Throughout the 4 day conference there will be simultaneous strands in the following areas:  assistive technology; autism; blind/VI; deaf/Hard of hearing; deaf-blind; educational interpreting; and multiply disabled.  Featured presenters include:

  • Dr. Jeanne Johnson, WSU, Foundations of Communication and Language and the EALRs;
  • Dr. June Downing,  Communication/Language Strategies for the Multiply Disabled
  • Jay and Marilyn Gense, Autism Spectrum Disorders and the Blind/Visually Impaired
  • Barbara Lynn Hardin, Communication Strategies Using Augmentative/Assistive Technology  for Children with Autism and Multiple disabilities
  • Dr. Susan Rose, University of Minnesota, How to do Progress Monitoring in literacy for students who are Deaf/Hard of Hearing
  • Judy Kraft, OSPI, WAAS Portfolio Assessment and Accommodations
  • Kristi Sakai, parent extraordinaire! Steps to Success in Home, Community & School for Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders

Conference registrations will be sent to districts in early April.  A copy of the registration form will be available online at that time.  Descriptions of the sessions will be available on this website in May.
