Coming June 25-27: PUD/NCESD Electrical Safety/Energy Conservation Program Summer Teacher Institute

We are looking for teachers from Okanogan, Chelan, Douglas and Grant counties to assist ESD staff with efforts to review, revise, and update the K-5 Electrical Safety/Energy Conservation programs. Participants will work with Andy Boyd, OSPI Science Assessment Specialist, who has been contracted to coordinate this work, and ESD staff who have been presenting the program this year. The Institute will be held June 25- 27 at NCESD. Each participant will receive a daily stipend plus mileage, meals, and lodging, if traveling more than 50 miles. If interested, a letter of interest needs to be submitted to Cindy Duncan, Assistant Superintendent for Academic Achievement, 430 Olds Station Rd., Wenatchee, WA 98801. Region’s Educators Launch Major Math Initiative

Teachers and administrators from across the region have joined together to form and finance a major math initiative called the Math Leadership Alliance.  The MLA initiative is a direct result of key feedback from teachers, teacher leaders, and administrators asking for a much clearer focus and aligned professional development programs for mathematics.

Waterville School District Receives $10,000 Qwest Grant

Waterville School District was recently notified that they received a state Qwest Grant in the amount of $10,000 for their Literate About Diversity project that involves a team of kindergarten through grade 6 teachers who believe that technology has the power to remove the barriers of demographics, location, size and budget inherent in small, rural districts. This dynamic program includes a suite of inquiry-based learning projects that integrate global positioning system technology, art, writing, communication and environmental science activities into standards-based lessons.

 

Awards Presented at WASA Small Schools Conference

Pateros School District was awarded the state National Civic Star Award for the Methow Art Alliance Project for exemplifying the value of community involvement to promote student academic achievement. This award was sponsored by AASA and Sodexho School Services. Shown above are Superintendent Larry Keller, Tina Tharp, State Superintendent Terry Bergeson and Laura Christian.
Jeff Peck, Morgen Owings Elementary Principal was selected as one of three recipients of the WASA "Most Effective Administrator" Award at the WASA Small Schools Conference. A $10,000 award, to be used for personal or professional growth, will be split three ways by the winners.

29th Annual Wenatchee Valley Museum Regional High School Art Show

The Wenatchee Valley Museum & Cultural Center recently announced the People's Choice Award winners for the Regional High School Art Show. For the first time in the 15 years the Art Show has been exhibited at the Wenatchee Valley Museum & Cultural center, each visitor who came to the museum between March 7 and april 5 to view the show had an opportunity to vote for his or her favorite entry.

Here are the PEOPLE’S CHOICE AWARD WINNERS:

1st Place: Ramón Mendoza of Ephrata High School for “Night Out”

2nd Place: Chrissa Cunning, Wenatchee High School, for “September Fire”

3rd Place (Three-way Tie):

Thirteen works from student artists in our Regional High School Art Show are going on to State! The works will be displayed in the 35th Annual Superintendent's High School Art Show "The Art of Everything" April 18 - May 28, at the Old Capitol Building in Olympia. There will be a Reception for the show on Friday, May 16, 2008, 2-4 p.m.
Student artists whose works are entered in the statewide competition are:

North Central Technical Skills Center holds open house for their Culinary Arts kitchen

The North Central Technical Skills Center held an open house January 24 in honor of its new culinary arts kitchen at their 327 East Penny Road location. Shown to the left are instructor Colin Levin and Skills Center Director Jon Torrence (center), along with Culinary Arts students. Guests at the grand opening had the opportunity to sample some of the students' excellent cooking.

Construction, including extensive remodeling, was recently completed on this nearly $1 million project.

Teachers Make a Difference scholarship winners were announced last spring, and now you can read their stories in Stepping Stones to Success.  Krista Hardiman from Quincy; Elizabeth Hernandez from Bridgeport; and Brandy Griffin from Lake Chelan were the 2007 scholarship winners.  Senator Linda Evans Parlette wrote the foreword for this sixth edition of Teachers Make a Difference.  Also included are stories written by students from Warden, Moses Lake, Eastmont, Cashmere, and Omak School Districts.  The book also features stories by NCESD Board member Larry MacGuffie and Ruth Lucero from Warden, 2008 NCESD Teacher of the Year.  Encore stories written by Rufus Woods, Publisher The Wenatchee World; Ray Taylor, retired CEO, Community Foundation of North Central Washington, and Vicki Taylor, 2004 NCESD Teacher of the Year, are included.

Walden University and North Central ESD Announce Statewide Partnership

North Central ESD Superintendent Rich McBride recently announced that North Central ESD has formed an a partnership with Walden University to provide online bachelor's master's and doctoral degrees for educators. Tuition savings will be available through Washington State ESDs. The newest offering is a B.A. in Early Childhood that may be of special interest to paraeducators.
