Tim Lawless Named Wal-Mart Teacher of the Year |
|||
A Leavenworth teacher has been chosen by Wal-Mart as its regional teacher of the year. Tim Lawless, a former principal who now teaches a fourth-and-fifth grade combination class at Osborn Elementary School, was presented with the award on Tuesday at a surprise assembly.
He said he was shocked that he had been chosen. Lawless’ students submitted forms to Wal-Mart to nominate their teacher. In 2004, 3,500 teachers and schools were honored through the Wal-Mart Teacher of the Year Program, recognized as the largest teacher recognition program in the United States, according to the company’s website. Osborn Elementary School received a $1,000 grant and Lawless received a $50 gift certificate, a Wal-Mart vest and certificate for his accomplishment. He is eligible now to apply for the state Teacher of the Year program, which could land the school a $10,000 grant, said Lawless. “I’m still in shock and I don’t know if I’ll do that, but I am deeply touched and thrilled to work in a fantastic school district,” he said.
