SUMMARY:Level 2 Threat Assessment
DESCRIPTION:OverviewThe purpose of a threat assessment is to prevent targeted violence. The appraisal of risk in a school setting focuses on action\, communication\, and circumstances that may suggest an individual intends to mount an attack and is engaged in planning or preparing for that event. The threat assessment process is centered upon an analysis of the facts and evidence of behavior in a given situation\, and sometimes a clear analysis requires the support and perspective of community experts beyond the walls of the school building. \nThis 2-hour Student Threat Assessment (STA) ZOOMtraining will cover the essential concepts of the Salem-Keizer Threat Assessment System\, and will clarify the roles of local experts who are eager to support the safety and well-being of our schools and community. (Open to community partners and anyone interested in furthering their understanding of Threat Assessment in education.) \nThis training will review the following: \n\nYouth Risk Factors\nSupportive Research and Best\nPractice Recommendations\nApplication of STA concepts\nClarification of community partners’ roles and responsibilities\n\nDate & TimeFriday\, September 9\n9:00am – 11:00am \nLocationVirtual\, Online Event\nHosted via Zoom \nRegistration PriceFree \nClock Hours2 Clock Hours Available for Purchase \nRegister via pdEnrollerBack to events calendar >

Is this inherent to intelligence? How does bias evolve over time? After Mr. Briscoe discusses definitions and types of bias in humans and machines (algorithms)\, he will show how “fairness via awareness” is often the best option. It is rather counter-intuitive\, but including sensitive features\, such as sex\, race\, gender\, and age\, in machine learning algorithms often reduces bias. He relate this to the human fallacies of composition and division. We cannot blindly take each part and believe it is the same as the whole. \nView & Download Seminar Flyer > \nThe seminar presentations are intended for a ‘science-based’ audience\, including researchers\, postdoctoral scientists\, teachers\, graduate students\, undergraduate scientists\, and science enthusiasts. \nK-12 educators are also encouraged to attend the seminar series to learn about local career connections and research efforts that they can bring back to their students. Clock hours are available through the North Central Educational Service District for attending the series. \nDate & TimeWednesday\, September 28\n4:00pm – 5:00pm \nLocationWSU Tree Fruit Research & Extension Center\n1100 N Western Ave\, Wenatchee\, WA 98801 \nRegistration PriceFree \nClock Hours1 Clock Hours Available for Purchase \nClick here to register on pdEnroller for Clock Hours \nLEARN MOREBack to events calendar >

SUMMARY:Science In Our Valley: Pear Psylla in Our Valley
DESCRIPTION:OverviewScience in Our Valley seminars run every Wednesday starting September 28 and ending November 16. All events are free and open to the public at the WSU Tree Fruit Research & Extension Center (1100 N Western Ave\, Wenatchee) from 4pm to 5pm. Prior registration is not required to attend these events. \nClick here to subscribe to Science In Our Valley email updates \nPear Psylla in Our Valley: 70 years of effort towards sustainable integrated pest managementPresented by Dr. Robert Orpet (Entomologist\, Washington State University Tree Fruit Research and Extension Center) \nInsect pest management is a major societal issue given public concern about pesticide use leading to declines in beneficial insects. In the Wenatchee Valley\, a major pear growing region\, entomologists have been attempting to apply principles of sustainable “integrated pest management” against the main pear pest pear psylla for 70 years. \nThis presentation will focus on the history of these efforts and the prospects for the future of sustainable pest management in the region. Pear psylla management in Washington has followed a cycle of crises: a new insecticides is invented that is effective against pear psylla\, then the pest evolves resistance\, and then pesticide use worsens the problem by killing the predators and parasitoids of the pest. The cycle repeats through the invention and loss of new active ingredients. Many researchers demonstrated that reducing use of pesticides and timing applications better can allow beneficial insects to keep pear psylla suppressed\, but industry has struggled to adopt these “integrated” pest management programs. New tools\, on-farm research programs\, and cooperation of agricultural professionals discussed in this presentation could help end the cycle of ineffective pesticide dependence in Washington. \nDate & TimeWednesday\, October 12\n4:00pm – 5:00pm \nLocationWSU Tree Fruit Research & Extension Center\n1100 N Western Ave\, Wenatchee\, WA 98801 \nRegistration PriceFree \nClock Hours1 Clock Hours Available for Purchase \nClick here to register on pdEnroller for Clock Hours \nLEARN MOREBack to events calendar >

SUMMARY:Grant County College & Career Expo
DESCRIPTION:OverviewThe 2022 NCW College and Career Expos will be in-person events at three different locations across the region! \nThe College & Career Expos are great events for high school students\, college students\, and recent graduates! At the event educators and local industry professionals come together to introduce students to work experiences that engage\, train and inspire them for the 21st-century workforce that is in demand by regional employers. \nIn addition to connecting with colleges and industry professionals\, students who attend the expos will get to engage in hands-on work based activities\, explore workplace tools and equipment and learn from real job descriptions. Students will also be granted access to a “digital lobby experience” that includes participating exhibitor contact information for future reference. \nWe encourage high schools and teachers to consider sending their students to this event to assist with their career exploration! If you are a school administrator or teacher and would like to learn more about the benefits of sending your students to this event\, please contact Tami McBride at the NCESD. \nLEARN MORE ABOUT THE EVENT \nDate & TimeTuesday\, November 8\n9:00am – 2:00pm \nLocationBig Bend Community College\n7662 Chanute St NE\, Moses Lake\, WA 98837 \nStudent RegistrationThis event is free to attend\, but registration is required.
