SUMMARY:Introduction to Green Chemistry in the High School Classroom
DESCRIPTION:OverviewGreen Chemistry is being widely used in industry and the need for future scientists who understand how to use the 12 principles to drive green innovation is acute. Green Chemistry education must be integrated into the way we teach scientists from the earliest ages. This course will provide an introduction to Green Chemistry and give teachers the skills and knowledge to practice green chemistry pedagogy and procedures in their classrooms. A broad overview of green chemistry will be given including ways that green chemistry is being used in industry. Lesson plans for teachers to use will be introduced which include all of these concepts as well as laboratory activities that can replace those that are currently used by teachers but are dangerous to human health and the environment. These new learnings are intended to be integrated into the content and standards that teachers are already required to teach and a portion of the work for this class will be developing implementation plans for each teacher. A survey of the available resources to teachers will be explored and those that are available for free download will be emphasized. \nDate & TimeCanvas course is available June 12 through August 7 \nLocationOnline Course\nvia Canvas \nRegistration PriceFree \nClock Hours48 Clock Hours Available for Purchase \nRegister via pdEnrollerBack to events calendar >

Everyone Has a Story\, Every Story Deserves HeroesHasan Davis\, CEO & Founder of Hasan Davis SolutionsHasan will share his experience of often interrupted transitions through education\, justice\, and social support systems. Simultaneously navigating learning disabilities\, poverty and delinquency\, Hasan seemed destined to become another statistic. But\, Hasan was lucky to find that on his journey there were champions\, like his mother and alternative school teacher\, who found ways to engage\, encourage and empower him. With the support of these “Hope Dealers\,” Hasan was able to transcend his mounting list of “failures” to become an advocate for himself and eventually a champion for others experiencing difficult times. \nBreakout SessionHasan will share some of the core strategies and creative thinking that these Hope Dealers deployed to help him find the courage to complete what he calls the “JD shuffle” going from Hasan Davis\, Juvenile Delinquent to Hasan Davis\, Juris Doctor. Come ready to celebrate\, recharge and recommit to being the Hope Dealers that you are\, the Heroes their stories deserve \nLearn More About Hasan Davis\nFor more than 25 years\, Hasan has held to the belief that each child can and will succeed as long as adults in their world create hope. Starting as a counselor and a teaching artist\, and through his years as a youth development specialist\, Hasan has transformed the attitudes and strategies of school and facility staff\, parents\, and members of the community to help hundreds of children graduate from high school and go on to earn degrees from colleges and universities. \nIn addition to his work at schools\, Hasan has been Commissioner of Juvenile Justice for the Commonwealth of Kentucky\, Vice Chair of the Federal Advisory Committee on Juvenile Justice\, and an organizational consultant. With this experience\, he has transformed organizations and public systems to ensure they have the capacity to not only meet the needs of the children and families they serve\, but also are transparent and set metrics and methods of accountability. \nHe brings to the process a powerful combination of passion\, caring\, and leadership to craft a refreshing\, common-sense roadmap to help all youth achieve their dreams\, no matter the odds. \nThursday\, August 10 | Afternoon KeynoteRole of Leadership in Promoting Effective Implementation of Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS)Steve Goodman\, PhD.\, Co-investigator\, Integrated MTSS Research NetworkMTSS is a framework beneficial to supporting each and all students as education utilizing effective practices matched to student need. This session will discuss the leadership role in promoting MTSS while ensuring that implementation is correct and consistent. Dr. Goodman will focus on the critical role that leadership plays in communicating priority for MTSS implementation\, and the role of leadership in promoting fidelity of implementation. \nLearn More About Steve Goodman\nSteve Goodman\, PhD is a partner with the Center on Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports and a co-investigator with the Integrated MTSS Research Network. Steve was the previous director of Michigan’s Multi-tiered System of Supports Technical Assistance Center. He serves on state\, national\, and international advisory boards for the implementation of MTSS. Steve has recently served on the Board of Directors for the Association for Positive Behavior Support. He has contributed to over 50 publications and has presented and worked with educators across the nation and in eight other countries on topics of PBIS and integration of multi-tiered frameworks. \nFriday\, August 11 | KeynoteLeading for InclusionKC Knudson\, Senior Education Consultant\, Novak EducationIn a 1994 study\, Leithwood et al found that “the problems leaders face in a school context are some of the most challenging you can find.” Earlier in 1973 Rittel and Webber described school problems as “wicked problems” being that they are difficult to define and even more difficult to solve. Over the course of the past decade the problems that leaders face in school contexts have become exponentially more complex. In this session\, we will discuss how school leaders can bring clarity to the purpose of their work and to the problems that they are trying to solve.  We will examine the three problems of inclusion and consider possible solutions based on evidence and the work of other school leaders across the country. \nLearn More About KC Knudson\nKC Knudson is an accomplished educational leader and staff developer with expertise in highly effective\, equitable pedagogies\, leadership development\, private facilitation and training\, and public speaking. He is a student of team dynamics\, adult learning\, group motivation\, and effective leadership practices; and he is committed to developing people and creating systems that work to create equitable outcomes for all. \nBack to events calendar >

SUMMARY:Level 2 Threat Assessment Training (Zoom)
DESCRIPTION:OverviewThe purpose of a threat assessment is to prevent targeted violence. The appraisal of risk in a school setting focuses on action\, communication\, and circumstances that may suggest an individual intends to mount an attack and is engaged in planning or preparing for that event. The threat assessment process is centered upon an analysis of the facts and evidence of behavior in a given situation\, and sometimes a clear analysis requires the support and perspective of community experts beyond the walls of the school building. \nThis 2-hour\, virtual Student Threat Assessment (STA) training will cover the essential concepts of the Salem-Keizer Threat Assessment System\, and will clarify the roles of local experts who are eager to support the safety and well-being of our schools and community. (Open to community partners and anyone interested in furthering their understanding of Threat Assessment in education.) \nThis training will review the following: \n\nYouth Risk Factors\nSupportive Research and Best Practice Recommendations\nApplication of STA concepts\nClarification of community partners’ roles and responsibilities\n\nDate & TimeTuesday\, September 12\n9:00am – 11:00am \nLocationOnline Training\nHosted via Zoom \nRegistration PriceFree \nClock Hours2 Equity Clock Hours Available for Purchase \nRegister via pdEnrollerBack to events calendar >

SUMMARY:PECS Level 1 Training
DESCRIPTION:OverviewThis intensive 13-hour interactive workshop is designed to teach educational and caregiver teams the theory and protocol for the Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS)\, an evidence-based practice based on Applied Behavior Analysis\, typical language development\, and B.F. Skinner’s Verbal Behavior. The workshop begins with an introduction to creating the most effective learning environment for implementing PECS via The Pyramid Approach to Education. Included is a discussion of the limitations of teaching other communication modalities (speech\, sign\, SGD) as an initial communication strategy. Using presenter demonstrations\, role-play opportunities\, and video examples participants will gain a thorough understanding and hands-on experience of each of the six phases of PECS. \nParticipants will leave the training with the skills necessary to teach spontaneous requesting\, picture discrimination\, sentence structure\, attributes for expanding language\, extended vocabulary\, responding to questions\, and commenting. The workshop concludes with a review of the extensive literature supporting the PECS protocol as an evidence-based practice\, tips to teach your learner to accept being told\, “No\,” and information related to transitioning from PECS to other communication modalities\, such as speech\, tablets with AAC apps\, or speech generating devices. For those who wish to successfully teach their learners functional communication (whether you have used PECS for some time or are new to the field)\, this workshop is an essential part of your development. \n*Materials and handouts are all included in the registration fee. \nDate & TimeMonday\, October 9\n8:00am – 4:00pm \nTuesday\, October 10\n8:00am – 4:00pm \nLocationNorth Central ESD\n430 Olds Station Road\, Wenatchee WA 98801 \nRegistration Price$300/person \nClock Hours13 Clock Hours Available for Purchase \nRegister via pdEnrollerBack to events calendar >
