SUMMARY:Restorative Justice Practices
DESCRIPTION:OverviewRestorative justice practices help to build celebrate accomplishments\, transform conflict\, rebuild relationships that have been harmed\, and reintegrate students who have been suspended or expelled. \nA restorative approach brings awareness that misconduct is part of the developmental process of every young person. Corrective responses to misconduct using punishment can actually increase the likelihood that the misbehavior will re-occur. Both the theory and practice of Restorative Justice emphasize: (1) identifying the harm\, (2) involving all stakeholders\, and (3) true accountability— repairing the harm and addressing its causes. Restorative Justice Practices applied in our schools reflects an approach to wrongdoing and harmful behavior that aims to both prevent wrongdoing at all levels and intervene in offending behavior. \nA restorative model fits well within the multi-tiered framework of support (MTSS) of Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports (PBIS) and is at the heart\, a prevention based approach. \nDate & TimeMonday\, April 29\n8:30am – 3:30pm \nTuesday\, April 30\n8:30am – 3:30pm \nLocationNorth Central ESD\n430 Olds Station Road\, Wenatchee WA 98801 \nRegistration Price$300/person \nClock Hours14 SEL Clock Hours Available for Purchase \nRegister via pdEnrollerBack to events calendar >

Blue mold is managed most effectively through through sanitation and use of fungicides at harvest. Repetitive use of fungicides with the same mode of action has resulted in the evolution of resistance to one or multiple fungicides simultaneously in packinghouse populations of P. expansum in the PNW. There is limited research on the relationship between fungicide resistance and fitness in P. expansum\, especially in regards to fungal isolates with resistance to multiple fungicides. Understanding this relationship may enable packers to better evaluate the risks posed by resistant populations of P. expansum and make informed decisions on fungicide application at harvest. \nView and Download Event Flyer > \n\nThe seminar presentations are intended for a ‘science-based’ audience\, including researchers\, postdoctoral scientists\, teachers\, graduate students\, undergraduate scientists\, and science enthusiasts. \nK-12 educators are also encouraged to attend the seminar series to learn about local career connections and research efforts that they can bring back to their students. SUMMARY:Project GLAD® Demonstration
DESCRIPTION:OverviewGuided Language Acquisition Design (Project GLAD®) is a model of professional development in the area of language acquisition and literacy.  A Project GLAD® Demonstration is a four-day\, in-classroom observation of the model and strategies.  Trainers will provide a guided demonstration of Project GLAD® strategies.  The strategies and model promote English language acquisition\, academic achievement\, and cross-cultural skills. \nWhat is a Demonstration? After the foundational training\, participants attend a multi-day training to observe the strategies previously studied. The morning is spent in the classroom where a GLAD® trainer is modeling the strategies and a second GLAD® trainer is in the back of the room coaching the teachers; discussing what strategies are being used\, how they help all students\, and how they pertain particularly to multilingual learners. The afternoons are spent reviewing\, answering questions\, and creating teacher materials to use in their own classrooms. Participants can register for any of the available Demo Days even if they do not teach at the training location or grade level. \nWhat is Project GLAD®While curricula and standards (Common Core\, Content-specific\, and Grade Level) tell teachers what to teach\, GLAD® shows teachers how to teach. It uses demonstration\, real-time modeling\, and research to give teachers a structure to follow and strategies to employ. The GLAD® philosophy is teach to the highest and scaffold for the neediest. All students have access to grade level materials\, and those that are at their individual level. \nLearn more at www.ncesd.org/news/ncesd-glad-trainings \nDate & TimeTuesday\, March 26\n7:30am – 2:30pm \nWednesday\, March 27\n7:30am – 2:30pm \nThursday\, March 28\n7:30am – 2:30pm \nFriday\, March 29\n7:30am – 2:30pm \nLocationVirginia Granger Elementary – Okanogan\, WA\nAny elementary teacher is invited to attend this training. \nRegistration Price$650/person \nClock Hours24 Clock Hours Available for Purchase \nRegister via pdEnrollerBack to events calendar >

Although the primary causal species for blue mold is believed to be Penicillium expansum\, several other Penicillium species have been identified and estimated to make up to 25% of the Penicillium population in the PNW. Four postharvest fungicides are registered for the control of blue mold and other postharvest diseases. Frequent use of the same fungicides has led to the emergence of P. expansum resistant strains. If found tolerant to the four postharvest fungicides on fruit\, these Penicillium species may cause a serious risk and a challenge for blue mold management in this already challenging disease but will also provide clues for better control \n\nView and Download Event Flyer > \nThe seminar presentations are intended for a ‘science-based’ audience\, including researchers\, postdoctoral scientists\, teachers\, graduate students\, undergraduate scientists\, and science enthusiasts. \nK-12 educators are also encouraged to attend the seminar series to learn about local career connections and research efforts that they can bring back to their students. SUMMARY:Science In Our Valley: Apple Breeding 101
DESCRIPTION:OverviewScientists and science educators in the Wenatchee Valley have been gathering for the past few years for weekly seminars to catalyze the development of an engaged regional scientific community. Each series features the research of local scientists and invited guest speakers. \nThis year’s events are held at the Washington State University Tree Fruit Research and Extension Center in Wenatchee\, and are open to the public. Join us for this great opportunity to learn about the incredible research in our own backyard. Prior registration is not required to attend these events. \nThis project is supported by a grant from Our Valley Our Future. Other supporters include: NCESD\, Apple STEM Network\, WSU Tree Fruit Research & Extension Center\, Wenatchee Valley College\, and USDA Research Station. \nClick here to subscribe to Science In Our Valley email updates \nApple Breeding 101Presented by India Cain\, Associate in Research\, Washington State University \nGain some insight into the process of apple breeding from the Washington State University (WSU) apple breeding program\, the home of the Cosmic Crisp® apple. Producing a new apple variety takes around 20 years of multi-stage evaluation and selection. \nThe WSU breeding program was started in 1994 with the aim of producing new varieties especially suited to the main production areas of the state. The program targets consumers by improving quality\, particularly texture\, as well as appearance and storability. The breeding program works closely with stakeholders to determine the method of release\, and the new variety is patented and given a commercial brand name before being released to consumers. \nView and Download Event Flyer > \nThe seminar presentations are intended for a ‘science-based’ audience\, including researchers\, postdoctoral scientists\, teachers\, graduate students\, undergraduate scientists\, and science enthusiasts. \nK-12 educators are also encouraged to attend the seminar series to learn about local career connections and research efforts that they can bring back to their students. Clock hours are available through the North Central Educational Service District for attending the series. \nDate & TimeWednesday\, February 28\n4:00pm – 5:00pm \nLocationWSU Tree Fruit Research & Extension Center\n1100 N Western Ave\, Wenatchee\, WA 98801 \nRegistration PriceFree \nClock Hours1 Clock Hours Available for Purchase \nClick here to register on pdEnroller for Clock Hours \nLEARN MOREBack to events calendar >
