SUMMARY:Science In Our Valley: Combining Mangos and Wild Mangos - The Wango Origin Story
DESCRIPTION:OverviewScientists and science educators in the Wenatchee Valley have been gathering for the past few years for weekly seminars to catalyze the development of an engaged regional scientific community. Each series features the research of local scientists and invited guest speakers. \nThis year’s events are held at the Washington State University Tree Fruit Research and Extension Center in Wenatchee\, and are open to the public. Join us for this great opportunity to learn about the incredible research in our own backyard. Prior registration is not required to attend these events. \nThis project is supported by a grant from Our Valley Our Future. Other supporters include: NCESD\, Apple STEM Network\, WSU Tree Fruit Research & Extension Center\, Wenatchee Valley College\, and USDA Research Station. \nClick here to subscribe to Science In Our Valley email updates \nCombining Mangos and Wild Mangos: The Wango Origin StoryPresented by Thiago Campbell\, PhD Student\, Washington State University \nDomestication of mangos has brought about a potential genetic bottleneck that is not as disease-resistant or adaptable to changing climactic conditions. \nThrough numerous years of collecting trips in Southeast Asia\, over 69 different wild mango species have been identified and collected\, with germplasm of many located in Puerto Rico and Florida\, among other places. These wild mangos were successfully crossbred with the common mango (Mangifera indica) to create new interspecific hybrids\, now referred to as ‘wangos’.These new fruits are in the earliest stages of development and require many years of testing for flowering induction\, precocity\, fruit quality\, etc.\, but they serve as a sign of the genetic potential available to create new fruits with a novel marketing opportunity. \nView & Download Seminar Flyer > \nThe seminar presentations are intended for a ‘science-based’ audience\, including researchers\, postdoctoral scientists\, teachers\, graduate students\, undergraduate scientists\, and science enthusiasts. \nK-12 educators are also encouraged to attend the seminar series to learn about local career connections and research efforts that they can bring back to their students. Clock hours are available through the North Central Educational Service District for attending the series. \nDate & TimeWednesday\, February 7\n4:00pm – 5:00pm \nLocationWSU Tree Fruit Research & Extension Center\n1100 N Western Ave\, Wenatchee\, WA 98801 \nRegistration PriceFree \nClock Hours1 Clock Hours Available for Purchase \nClick here to register on pdEnroller for Clock Hours \nLEARN MOREBack to events calendar >

SUMMARY:Project GLAD® Demonstration of Secondary
DESCRIPTION:OverviewGuided Language Acquisition Design (Project GLAD®) is a model of professional development in the area of language acquisition and literacy.  A Project GLAD® Demonstration is a four-day\, in-classroom observation of the model and strategies. Trainers will provide a guided demonstration of Project GLAD® strategies.  The strategies and model promote English language acquisition\, academic achievement\, and cross-cultural skills. \nWhat is a Demonstration? After the foundational training\, participants attend a multi-day training to observe the strategies previously studied. The morning is spent in the classroom where a GLAD® trainer is modeling the strategies and a second GLAD® trainer is in the back of the room coaching the teachers; discussing what strategies are being used\, how they help all students\, and how they pertain particularly to multilingual learners. The afternoons are spent reviewing\, answering questions\, and creating teacher materials to use in their own classrooms. Participants can register for any of the available Demo Days even if they do not teach at the training location or grade level. \nWhat is Project GLAD®While curricula and standards (Common Core\, Content-specific\, and Grade Level) tell teachers what to teach\, GLAD® shows teachers how to teach. It uses demonstration\, real-time modeling\, and research to give teachers a structure to follow and strategies to employ. The GLAD® philosophy is teach to the highest and scaffold for the neediest. All students have access to grade level materials\, and those that are at their individual level. \nLearn more at www.ncesd.org/news/ncesd-glad-trainings \nDate & TimeTuesday\, December 58:00am – 3:00pm \nWednesday\, December 6\n8:00am – 3:00pm \nThursday\, December 7\n8:00am – 3:00pm \nFriday\, December 8\n8:00am – 3:00pm \nLocationWestside High School\n1510 9th St\, Wenatchee\, WA 98801 \nNorth Central ESD\n430 Olds Station Road\, Wenatchee\, WA 98801 \nRegistration Price$650/person \nClock Hours24 Clock Hours Available for Purchase \nRegister via pdEnrollerBack to events calendar >

SUMMARY:Project GLAD® Demonstration
\nLearn more at www.ncesd.org/news/ncesd-glad-trainings \nDate & TimeTuesday\, November 28\n8:00am – 3:00pm \nWednesday\, November 29\n8:00am – 3:00pm \nThursday\, November 30\n8:00am – 3:00pm \nFriday\, December 1\n8:00am – 3:00pm \nLocationSt. Joseph Catholic Church\n625 S Elliott Ave\, Wenatchee\, WA 98801 \nNorth Central ESD\n430 Olds Station Road\, Wenatchee\, WA 98801 \nRegistration Price$650/person \nClock Hours24 Clock Hours Available for Purchase \nRegister via pdEnrollerBack to events calendar >
