North Central Educational Service District Celebrates Regional School Nurse Day 2025

On Wednesday, May 7, 2025, school nurses from districts across North Central Washington gathered at the NCESD to celebrate National School Nurse Day. The special event honored the dedication and expertise of school nurses, and the critical role they play in supporting the health, wellness, and academic success of students nationwide.

This year’s celebration also recognized NCESD School Nurse Corps Director, Cathy Meuret, who will be retiring at the conclusion of the 2024-25 school year. Cathy has been leading the School Nurse Program for over 8 years and has provided guidance and support to school nurses across North Central Washington. Prior to becoming an employee, Cathy also served on the NCESD Board of Directors.

During the event, Cathy was surprised with flowers and a scrapbook commemorating her time with the NCESD. Numerous school nurses from districts across the region also submitted letters of appreciation and congratulations to Cathy.

The School Nurse Role in the Education Setting

School nurses provide student care coordination and case management support, and advocate for evidence-based, student-centered care. They serve as the critical link between the school, home, primary healthcare providers, and community and mental health services. Their contributions support student attendance, learning engagement, graduation rates, and ultimately, development of successful community members.

School districts are required by law to provide health services and make accommodations for students with chronic or life-threatening health conditions and these requirements are overseen by the school nurse. For some students, the nurse serves as their primary connection to a licensed health professional. School nurse responsibilities include assessing student health and safety needs, developing appropriate student care plans, training school staff involved in health services and student care, compiling mandatory health data, coordinating student health screenings, and addressing communicable diseases.
