Wenatchee School District Hosts Deaf Ed Bowling Event
On May 2nd, the Wenatchee School District hosted a bowling event at Eastmont Lanes for Deaf/Hard of Hearing students from 9 districts across the region. The event offered free attendance for students and helped to foster a sense of belonging, provided an opportunity for social interaction and connection, and promoted understanding and acceptance within and outside the D/HH community.
NCESD Teacher of the Deaf, Carrie Reece, and Teacher of the Deaf Intern, Katie Cannata, were in attendance to help facilitate the event.
“I was amazed to see all of the students and staff fill the bowling alley,” said Reece. “One of my students mentioned to me later that she had never been around other students with hearing loss like herself.”
The role of the NCESD Teacher of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing is to provide direct and/or constructive special education services specific to hearing loss. Carrie works with the educational team by advising about ways of enhancing the student’s learning through pre-teaching and re-teaching content, teaching self-advocacy skills as well as building language using a variety of modes of communication. TODs work with parents, other educators, and specialists, like audiologists, to ensure a coordinated approach to support the child’s needs.
In the past, students from the NCESD region have attended DHH events in Auburn as well as collaborative Zooms to meet and socialize with other DHH peers. Look for our upcoming Spring 2026 event with Wenatchee School District!
