North Central Educational Service District announces regional Teacher of the Year

Wenatchee, Wash. – North Central Educational Service District (NCESD) has selected Jon Magnus as the 2018 regional Teacher of the Year.

Magnus is a French teacher at Wenatchee High School, and is the co-founder of the Wenatchee School District mentor program and serves as Advisor for the Interact Club. Holding a Masters of Education from Central Washington University, he has also received education at Universite de Haute Bretagne in Rennes, France and the University of Washington. Magnus has served as a keynote speaker at a number of professional events, is a published author, and holds notable honors including Mentor of the Year, Humanitarian Extraordinaire, Teacher of the Year, and the Educator of Excellence award.

“It is a great honor and privilege to be named NCESD Teacher of the Year.   I am happy to accept this title on behalf of all dedicated educators who strive daily to meet the needs of our learners.  Our job is one of tremendous responsibility – to prepare students to lead productive and successful lives in a world that is increasingly interdependent.  I look forward to this coming year and will do my best to represent students and teachers alike as we work together to achieve our goals,” he explained.

Magnus was selected by a committee from a pool of nominees submitted from throughout the four-county NCESD service district.

“The choice was very difficult because of the outstanding caliber of candidates.  But, Jon’s passion for his students was very clear.  His love for teaching was evident and his commitment to community activities, such as ‘Interact’ and his mentoring project, was inspiring,” explained committee and NCESD Board member Marcia Henkle.

“Early in my career I made an astounding discovery: there is no universal recipe for designing the ‘perfect’ lesson.  Every group of students is different.  Every day is different.  True learning is influenced by a myriad of factors.  Some fall within my control, others do not.  I quickly discovered that successful lessons involve two fundamental components:  understanding individual learning styles, and honoring student feedback,” he explained.

Each ESD in Washington State selects a regional Teacher of the Year, who go on to compete for state honors. The State winner serves as a spokesperson and representative of teachers at the local, state and national levels. Camille Jones, a teacher from the Quincy School District was selected as the 2017 Washington State Teacher of the Year.

The North Central Educational Service District is a resource to the 29 districts within the four-county service area, providing professional and timely tools to meet the needs of individual schools and districts, and a reliable point of education-related information for the communities served. The NCESD is a respected resource to other ESDs throughout Washington State.
