North Central ESD Announces 2027 Regional Teacher of the Year and 2026 Classified School Employee of the Year
The North Central Educational Service District (NCESD) has selected the recipients of the 2027 Regional Teacher of the Year and 2026 Regional Classified School Employee of the Year for the North Central Washington region: Amelia Lehman (Eastmont School District) and Teresa Vargas (Orondo School District), respectively.
Both Lehman and Vargas are now eligible for state honors through the Washington Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction.
Amelia Lehman is a 4th grade teacher at Cascade Elementary in the Eastmont School District. She was nominated for her unwavering commitment to students, colleagues, and the broader school community. She was recognized for creating a classroom environment that promotes students to feel seen, valued, and capable of success.
“I believe students learn best when they see that what they are learning in school is directly connected to their lives, their families, and their community,” Lehman shared. “Teaching in a small agricultural community, I intentionally design learning experiences that help students understand how their world is shaped by both natural systems and human decisions. By connecting classroom content to local experiences, I help students see themselves as part of something meaningful and relevant.”
Beyond her classroom, Amelia has been recognized as a trusted leader and mentor. She willingly shares her expertise, supports colleagues, and contributes thoughtfully to schoolwide initiatives.
“If I were speaking to educators across Washington at the start of the school year, my message would be simple: greet with a smile and teach with heart,” Lehman shared. “Every day, students walk through our doors carrying more than backpacks. They carry their experiences, their cultures, their challenges, and their hopes. In public education, we do not choose who comes into our classrooms—and that is the beauty of what we do. We are given the opportunity to teach every child. And I firmly believe that every single student can and will learn when they are met with high expectations, consistency, and care.”
Teresa Vargas is the Executive Assistant to the Superintendent and District Office Manager of the Orondo School District. Vargas was nominated for the Classified School Employee of the Year for her outstanding work, knowledge, and for going above and beyond her role to help others. Additionally, she spends time forging community connections, advocating for needs, and seeking resources for others.
“The most important part of my role is ensuring that the operational systems of the school function smoothly, accurately, and in full compliance,” Vargas shared. “My work supports the structural foundation of the building, protects instructional time, and ensures students receive uninterrupted services.”
